Mapping Colors: Dye Show

I am excited to announce my forthcoming solo exhibition at Oakopolis Gallery, in Oakland this summer. It has been a long time in the making and I can’t wait to share it with you. Come out for the Oakland Art Murmur or the Saturday Stroll. Also check out mywebsite for the dye workshops where you can learn to make your eco-prints on August 11 at Tilden Park in Berkeley and September 8 at Ocean Beach in San Francisco

The show will run from August 2-September 14, 2013. The gallery will be open 6-9pm August 2 and September 6 and August 3 and September  7 from 12-5pm and by appointment. Below is the story of how the work came to be. Hope to see you there!

Highlighting the colors and patterns through the biodiversity of three distinct regions this show uses the eco-printing on silk to explore these regions. This show traces the journey of the artist over the last six months while she made her home in the highlands of central Mexico, the jungles of the Yucatan peninsula, and the wild windy ridges of Northern California. Each piece produced is one of a kind and the process mimics the principles of monoprinting using plants and every day objects.

Bundling or ecoprinting is a little known technique where the artist uses the relief of the images to create patterns on fabric. It was shared with her by Cory Gunter Brown and Cassidy Wright and inspired by India Flint. The unique and personal nature of the process pulled Chelsea outside to walk and look in each place and to notice the subtleties of each landscape.
